Global Markets: Fire destroys B.C. village

WINNIPEG, July 2 (MarketsFarm) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– More than a thousand people were evacuated from Lytton, B.C. on Wednesday as a fire decimated the Fraser Canyon community northeast of Vancouver that made headlines earlier in the week for reporting the highest temperatures ever recorded in Canada. Nearly 90 per cent of the structures in the village were destroyed by the fire. It’s not known yet if there were any fatalities, with efforts still underway to investigate any residents still unaccounted for.

– The highly contagious COVID-19 Delta variant has surged in Asia and Australia over this past week, leading to tightened pandemic measures in some countries. Japan, set to host the Olympics later this month, has also seen an increase in cases. While vaccines have shown effectiveness against the variant, vaccination rates in many parts of the region remain low, with only six per cent of Australians fully vaccinated and 12 per cent in Japan.

– The last of the United States military has reportedly withdrawn from the Bagram airbase in Afghanistan, handing over control of the base to the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces. A official handover ceremony is expected on Saturday. The U.S. has had a military presence in Afghanistan for nearly 20 years following the 9/11 attacks, but will leave only a few hundred soldiers behind to protect its embassy in Kabul. The Taliban is reportedly making gains in the countryside, seizing territory as the U.S. withdraws.
