Global Markets: Journalists share Nobel Peace Prize

WINNIPEG, Oct. 8 (MarketsFarm) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– This year’s Nobel Peace Prize has been won by journalists Maria Ressa, of the Philippines, and Dmitry Muratov, of Russia. They were recognized for their “for their efforts to safeguard freedom of expression.” The two are the first journalists to win the prize since 1935.

– A nuclear powered United States Navy submarine struck an object while in international waters of the South China Sea. Eleven sailors were reportedly injured, but the sub’s nuclear propulsion plant was reportedly unharmed. Few other details of the incident, which happened earlier in the month, were available.

– An explosion at a Shia mosque in northern Afghanistan reportedly killed or wounded at least 100 people. There were no immediate claims of responsibility, but the Islamic State has a history of attacking the Shia Muslim minority in the region in the past.
