Global Markets: U.S. recommends COVID-19 booster shot

WINNIPEG – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– Health officials in the United States announced on Wednesday plans to offer Americans a booster shot of COVID-19 vaccine eight months after their second shot of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines. Those who have taken the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine may need more than one booster shot, officials said. The new vaccine plans come amidst the COVID-19 Delta variant and signs vaccine protection may be fading. However, the World Health Organization (WHO) has spoken out against the plan, saying that poor countries are not receiving enough vaccine.

– Legal arguments in the extradition hearing of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou concluded on Wednesday more than two years after she was arrested in Vancouver. British Columbia Supreme Court Associate Chief Justice Heather Holmes set the next appearance in October, but also said she would not have a decision by then. The U.S. wants to extradite Meng to New York where she faces fraud charges.

– The U.S. Labor Department reported on Thursday there were 348,000 jobless claims for the week ended Aug. 14, the lowest weekly total in 17 months. Despite a record 6.149 million claims in April 2020, last week’s total is still at least 100,000 more than what is seen in a healthy labour market. While today’s numbers point to job growth, the rising number of new COVID-19 cases poses a threat.
