– Former Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney threw his support behind the governing Liberal Party of Canada during its virtual convention over the weekend. Carney, who is also the former head of the Bank of England and currently the United Nations special envoy on climate action and finance, did not indicate if he will run in the next federal election. Furthermore, convention organizers denied the media the opportunity to pose questions to Carney, who is already being hailed as a star candidate.

– Protests broke out in the Minneapolis suburb of Brooklyn Center on Sunday, shortly after the death of a 20-year-old African-American Daunte Wright, who was shot by local police during a traffic stop. The shooting came as the murder trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has heightened racial tensions in the city. Brooklyn Center Police fired flash bangs and tear gas at the protestors and the Minnesota National Guard was deployed to the city of 30,000.
– As tensions between Russia and Ukraine continued to rise, the latter’s president called on the United States for additional military aid. During a visit to frontline troops on Monday, President Volodymyr Zelensky requested more weapons and money from the U.S, as well as support for the country to join NATO. Over the last several weeks, Russia and Ukraine have been amassing soldiers along their border as fighting between Ukrainian forces and rebels in the largely Russian-speaking Donbass region carried on. Fears have risen that Russia could directly enter the fray, widening the conflict.
