A snapshot of Alberta’s bison sector is now available through Alberta Agriculture and Forestry.

The province has nearly half of the national bison herd — about 55,000 head on 440 farms, according to 2016 data.

“The ranched bison industry in Alberta, and throughout North America, continues to thrive with strong market prices and high demand for the product,” said Jayson Galbraith, the province’s bison and elk specialist.

There is an estimated 385,000 bison in the North American herd, and the sector has a goal of reaching one million by 2025. The two-page profile has capsule information on processing, exports, prices, and industry links.

It can be found at the Alberta Agriculture website.
