Ongoing testing key to preventing BSE

Cattle producers are being reminded of the importance of participating in the BSE surveillance program.

“I can’t see why anyone would not participate in it,” said Darrel Rutt, a longtime cattle rancher in the Valleyview area. “A lot of people went through a lot of work in the following years to create access back into the markets that had closed to us because of the outbreak. Without this ongoing surveillance program, I feel we are in danger of losing or being severely restricted to the markets we’ve reopened.”

Any animals suspected of having BSE should be reported to a veterinarian.

The program offers free veterinary visits for sample collection and free testing.
