Saxby Foods of Edmonton is launching the widest variety of organic fluid milk products produced in Alberta. The products can be purchased at Safeway stores in Alberta and across Canada under the O Organics brand starting this November.
Alberta Milk says that until now, some organic milk was shipped from other provinces to fill the organic gap in the market; the rest was from a small, Albertan on-farm processor.
Saxby will be processing skim, one per cent, two per cent and whole milk varieties. In early 2011, organic chocolate milk, sour cream, cream cheese and yogurt will be added to their production.
Alberta Milk says eight certified organic producers in Alberta who jumped at the opportunity to produce for Saxby when presented with the idea in early 2007. It takes three years for land to become certificated organic and one year for cattle.
