Russia may extend its grain export ban beyond July 1, 2011, as delayed fertilizer deliveries put spring crops at risk, threatening next year’s harvest, the head of the powerful grain lobby said Dec. 20. “If we harvest 90 million tonnes then no regulation will be needed, but if we harvest less, say 70 million tonnes, then something will have to be done,” the Russian Grain Union’s president Arkady Zlochevsky, told a news briefing. Russia harvested 60.5 million tonnes of grain last year after a severe drought, the worst in more than a century, after 97 million tonnes in 2009 and 108 million tonnes in 2008. Russia imposed a ban on grain exports from Aug. 15, 2010 to Jan. 1, 2011. – Reuters
