Russia plans to increase the sown area for spring grains in 2011 by 2.9 million hectares from 2010 to compensate for reduced winter wheat sowing, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said Nov. 28. “In the spring of 2011, plans are to increase the sown area by 2.9 million hectares,” Putin said. The Russian Grain Union said last earlier that the nation needs to sow a combined 40 million hectares of land in winter and spring to achieve a grain harvest of 80 million tonnes.
