Labour Day weekend brought about the final show in the Alberta Farmer Summer Beef Show Series. This event which is spearheaded by the Pembina Cattle Breeders encompasses six summer fairs in the north-central Alberta region. These include Barrhead, Mayerthorpe, Westlock, Darwell, Rich Valley and Smith.
At each of the six beef cattle shows the results are tabulated and at the conclusion of the final show awards are presented for the high-point bull and high-point female.
This year’s award for the high-point bull went to Cinder Angus from Barrhead owned by Brad Yoder and Nichole Hoskins for their yearling Red Angus bull Red Lone Stone Pursuit 81W.

Farming Smarter receives financial boost from Alberta government for potato research
Farming Smarter near Lethbridge got a boost to its research equipment, thanks to the Alberta government’s increase in funding for research associations.
The award for the high-point female was won by Byron and Gwen Brandl of Brandl Cattle Co, Jarvie for their two-year old Black Angus cow BCC Black Velvet 46U.
The show series was started four years ago to rejuvenate beef cattle shows in the region. Each of the six shows includes a free draw for spectators to win a $500 credit towards the purchase of a bull from any one of the Pembina Cattle Breeders exhibiting on that day. These shows are an excellent venue for local cattlemen to view the top genetics that are available to them.
Since the inception of this show series most fairs have seen their beef cattle entries triple from what they were in the early part of the decade. This year it was encouraging to see breeders exhibiting that haven’t had cattle at these events for nearly 15 years.
The series is sponsored by Alberta Farmer Express,CFCW, Unifeed,Canadian Cattlemen magazine, and the Pembina Cattle Breeders.
