Farmers will have the chance to ride and drive equipment and see demos of drone technology at this year’s Ag in Motion.

Farmers demanded “real equipment doing real things” and that’s what they’ll get at this year’s Ag in Motion outdoor farm show in July.

“Decisions are made in the dirt,” said show director Rob O’Connor, in a May 25 news release.

“The show is held outdoors, so there is room to stage very large equipment on-site and other products like drone technology that would be difficult to show off in an indoor environment.”

Farming Smarter near Lethbridge got a boost to its research equipment, thanks to the Alberta government’s increase in funding for research associations.

Ag in Motion is a 100-acre outdoor farm show hosted at Glacier FarmMedia’s Discovery Farm Langham, near Langham Sask., northwest of Saskatoon.

This year’s show runs July 18-20.

A 2022 post-show survey indicated farmers wanted to see live demonstrations, according to the May release. The show has expanded its demonstrations of large-scale machinery and drone technology, as well as crop plot displays, said a spokesperson for the show.

Organizers also say the three-day show will feature expanded “Ride & Drives,” where attendees can test drive equipment. This year, a skid steer test drive option has been added.

New this year is Irrigation Alley, an area where farmers can visit exhibitors that feature irrigation, water management and drainage products.

The show will also add the Peavey Mart Rural Pavilion, which focuses on products for rural living.

Ag in Motion is expected to host more than 550 exhibitors, and one corner of the show, dubbed BMO Livestock Central, will highlight the “latest industry-specific information,” the release said.

A cattle-dog competition and networking event focused on livestock producers has been added to the schedule.

Other events include the AgTech Breakfast, which brings together startup companies and farmers. The event will feature a panel discussion between producer, startup company and moderator, followed by “elevator pitches” from startups.

“The majority of them are not market ready,” O’Connor said, adding that the companies “need that input from the people who actually use [them] in the field.”

Finally, the show will feature the Innovations program, which seeks out the best in new or up-and-coming products, whether that is in the spheres of crop or livestock or even genetic innovation, said O’Connor. A team of experts judge submitted entries and choose winners ahead of the show.

Unlike the products at the AgTech Breakfast, these products will be available for sale at the show, or if not, will soon be available, O’Connor added.

Ag in Motion publishes a booklet showing winners in five product categories.
