The provincial government has anted up another $115,000 to keep a recycling pilot program for grain bags and baler twine going until next year.
The Alberta Ag Plastic. Recycle It! pilot, scheduled to end last month, will run until the end of August 2023.
“The long-term goal of the group is to expand the pilot into a permanent program,” said Al Kemmere, chair of the Agricultural Plastics Recycling Group, made up of farm organizations, municipalities and other ag industry players.

The group is looking at something called the EPR model, which is short for extended producer responsibility. It’s a levy that would go towards the costs of collection of the bags and twine for recycling.
In Saskatchewan, that increased the cost of grain bags from about five to seven per cent.
