Alberta’s wheat and barley commissions have a nitrogen rate of return calculator available on their website.
The calculator, developed by well-known research agronomist Rigas Karamanos, “can be used to evaluate different net return per acre scenarios which compare different N sources and costs, various crop prices and soil test N levels,” Alberta Wheat and Barley said.
The online tool can be used for spring wheat and feed barley.

Irrigation capacity questioned
Some are highly skeptical that Canada could massively expand irrigation in Saskatchewan and Alberta so that 10 per cent of Canada’s farmland is irrigated.
In addition to some basic info (soil zone, N product and cost), the calculator also requires results from soil tests, the planned application and at what price a producer expects to sell the grain.
The calculator can be found at albertawheatbarley.com.
