Rocky View County in Alberta collected 11,275 kilograms of obsolete pesticides during a collection program held last year in partnership with Clean- FARMS.

The program was held at five locations over the course of the summer and early fall of 2010 where farmers could drop off unwanted and unused pesticides.

“This was the first time that CleanFARMS partnered with a county and it was a huge success for both the industry and the municipality,” manager Barry Friesen said in a release.

The obsolete pesticide collection program is a national, industry-initiated program that, since 1998, has assumed responsibility for more than 1.4 million kilograms of obsolete, commercial- grade pesticides. After collection, the pesticides are taken to a licensed disposal facility where they are disposed of through high-temperature incineration.
