Water levels in some southern Alberta reservoirs are well below normal for this time of year according to a Government of Alberta report released May 16 on alberta.ca. Here’s a breakdown:

  • Oldman Reservoir: current storage is at 51 per cent. Normal for this time of year is between 68 and 89 per cent.
  • St. Mary Reservoir: current storage is 58 per cent. Normal is between 69 and 83 per cent.
  • Pine Coulee Reservoir: current storage is 53 per cent. Normal is between 74 and 92 per cent.
  • Waterton Reservoir: current storage is 54 per cent. Normal is between 69 per cent and 83 per cent.
  • Gleniffer Reservoir (Dickson Dam): current storage is 66 per cent. Normal is between 48 and 59 per cent.

Water storage volumes in the major irrigation and hydroelectric reservoirs of the Milk, Oldman, Bow, Red Deer, North Saskatchewan and Athabasca River basins are updated every weekday and are available in the Provincial Reservoir Storage Summary.

Irrigation districts serving the South Saskatchewan River basin, Red Deer River, Bow River and the main stem of the Oldman River and its upper tributaries entered into agreements April 19 to reduce their water use if severe drought conditions develop this spring or summer.

According to alberta.ca, as of May 10 — the most recent date this information is available — the agreements for the Oldman South Saskatchewan River basin and its southern tributaries had been activated. The Red Deer River basin and Bow River basin agreements had not been activated.
