Dust storm, hurricane-force winds tear across U.S. upper Midwest

Chicago | Reuters — Hurricane-force winds tore across the U.S. upper Midwest Thursday evening, sending walls of dust across cities and rural towns, causing widespread property damage and killing at least two people. Straight-line winds up to 170 km/h reached from Kansas to Wisconsin, pushing waves of farmland topsoil across the horizon and plunging communities […] Read more

Bin pest survey on deck for southern Alberta

Reading Time: < 1 minute Producers in southern Alberta are being asked to take part in a grain bin pest survey next fall. The survey is being conducted by a team led by Vincent Hervet, a stored grain specialist with AgCanada in Winnipeg. Team members would visit a farm twice in September/October, first to set traps and then to remove […] Read more

Better bin monitoring data is key to better drying and that, in turn, could allow Prairie farmers to start harvest a week or two earlier, says Chandra Singh, an expert in wireless sensor technology for grain bins.

Better grain bin sensors could put you in the combine a week earlier

The key to an earlier start is being able to successfully dry down higher-moisture grain, says expert

Reading Time: 4 minutes To some, new research on wireless sensors and automated fans for grain bins may seem like just another technical study. But there’s big stakes in play — an opportunity to move up harvest by a week or even two, says Chandra Singh. “When I joined Lethbridge College in 2019 there was a very early snow […] Read more

The cost of grain bins has risen $1 a bushel — a 25 per cent jump — in the last five years, says a provincial market analyst.

Do the math before adding more grain storage

Lots of bin space can help you wait out low prices at harvest, but the cost of storage is rising

Reading Time: 2 minutes Having more grain storage can be a big plus, but it’s not a slam dunk, says a market analyst with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. “Farmers in Alberta along with growers in other Prairie provinces have more grain storage than most of their worldwide competitors,” said Ryan Furtas. “However, having storage capacity can be a marketing […] Read more

Sturgeon County Emergency Services, which took BeGrainSafe training in August, is one of several rural fire departments being given grain rescue equipment.

Rural Alberta fire departments get grain rescue equipment

Reading Time: < 1 minute The Canadian Agricultural Safety Association (CASA) in partnership with G3 is donating $25,000 worth of life-saving grain rescue equipment to several rural Alberta fire departments. Select fire departments located near G3’s new grain elevators in the Carmangay, Irricana, Morinville, Stettler County, Wetaskiwin and Vermilion areas will be trained before receiving the rescue equipment. These bins on this Bonnyville farm were empty when they were toppled by winds gusting to 130 kilometres an hour in January 2014. The bins were anchored with cables but it wasn’t enough. However, the full bins (which also had cables anchored to the ground) — although described as “rocking back and forth” and needed to be supported by tractors — stayed standing.

Don’t let grain bins blow away — anchor with care

You don’t need a concrete base to keep a bin upright in high winds, but strong anchoring is a must

Reading Time: 3 minutes As anyone who’s seen the footage can tell you, the ‘bomb cyclones’ which hit the flooded U.S. Midwest this spring showed the force of Mother Nature at its most devastating. The combination of heavy winds and water not only knocked grain bins over — it crushed them like aluminum cans, sending them floating down makeshift […] Read more

Grain equipment firm AGI takes stake in Farmobile

Canadian grain handling and storage equipment maker Ag Growth International plans to dial up its collaboration with ag tech firm Farmobile and has taken a minority stake in the U.S. company to that end. Winnipeg-based AGI announced Tuesday it had agreed to make a “minority equity investment” of US$15 million (C$19.57 million) in Farmobile, effective […] Read more

Storage problems can start almost as soon as grain is loaded into bins.

Keep ‘unpleasant surprises’ out of your grain bins this fall

Don’t neglect the basics when storing grain or oilseeds,
says provincial crop specialist

Reading Time: 2 minutes A little preparation prior to harvesting can ensure worry-free winter crop storage, says a provincial crop specialist. “Warm or wet conditions at harvest and multi-staged crops are potential ingredients for storage problems,” said Harry Brook. “Take the time to monitor the stored grain’s condition and cool those bins down. Don’t get an unpleasant surprise when […] Read more

Many producers have decided bigger storage is better and more of it makes financial sense, say industry watchers.

More and bigger bins setting storage records across Prairies

Grain bin sales continue to grow, but producers planning on buying may want to act soon in the wake of tariffs

Reading Time: 4 minutes Twenty-nine million tonnes is a lot of grains and oilseeds, but that’s how much Prairie producers were holding on their farms as of March 31, according to Statistics Canada. What’s even more remarkable is that it doesn’t even come as much of a surprise — that number is only a little higher than the five-year […] Read more
