The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association is hailing the interim trade deal with the U.K., but says a new long-term agreement needs to “resolve trade barriers” when it comes to the trade in beef between the two countries.
“A glaring inequity that remains to be resolved is that Canadian beef producers face far more hurdles to export to the U.K. than U.K. producers experience exporting to Canada,” the CCA said.
The association said Canada sold $12.9 million (1,047 tonnes) to the U.K. in the first nine months of this year while importing $24 million worth of British beef (4,126 tonnes).
The gap is even worse with the EU, it said, noting the overall Canada-EU beef trade deficit was $17.3 million last year and “an astounding $74.5 million for the first nine months of 2020.”
