The number of Canadian producers raising EU-eligible beef has tripled in the past year — but the number remains small, says the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association.
In a recent newsletter, the CCA says its “best estimate” is that more than 100 producers have enrolled in a certification program that ensures they’re not using growth-enhancing products. But the association estimates about 5,000 producers would be needed for the 50,000-tonne quota of such beef.
But exports are growing — up 87 per cent (versus year-ago levels) to 771 tonnes from January to October, said the CCA. “Interest in Canadian beef in EU countries continues to grow,” it said.
