U.S. EPA proposal likes canola oil for renewable fuel

A final EPA decision is expected this summer, which, if favourable, could add new demand for Canada's premier oilseed

Canola has another feather in its cap — one which is expected to put more money in farmers’ pockets. In a ‘proposed decision’ released in April the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognized canola oil’s value as an environment-friendly alternative to fossil-based fuel — a move that’s expected to add new demand for the crop. Canola sector will need a big push to reach production target

But crushers seem confident that canola sector can greatly increase yields and hit its ‘26 by 2025’ goal

Reading Time: 3 minutes The Canola Council of Canada’s plan to push production to 26 million tonnes annually by 2025 is still on — but the goal is looking ever-more daunting. The 18 attachés involved in the report expect about 31.07 million tonnes in total, for a 0.4 per cent bump in total oilseed output from 2021-22. The oilseeds included […] Read more

Upping seed survival rates isn’t magic and some farmers are regularly achieving 80 per cent or better emergence, says the Canola Council of Canada.

Good beginnings make for happy endings for canola stands

Seeding a little too deep while going a little too fast are two big, but common, mistakes

Reading Time: 4 minutes The canola industry has a big goal — boost long-term average yields by six bushels an acre by 2025 in order to keep up with demand from crushers. That’s not a goal that can be achieved, however, if one out of every two seeds coming out of the seeder fails to germinate. Rather, seed survival […] Read more

ICE weekly outlook: Trend remains pointed higher for canola

MarketsFarm — The ICE Futures canola market climbed to fresh contract highs once again during the week ended Wednesday, although profit-taking at those highs did slow the advances. While additional corrections are possible, both the underlying fundamentals and technical remain supportive. “This is the bull market of all time in canola,” said analyst Mike Jubinville […] Read more
