The Alberta Wheat Commission is urging the federal Liberal government to quickly pass Bill C-49, which will overhaul the Transportation Act.

In a presentation to the standing committee on transport earlier this month, commission reps also recommended amendments to make interswitching more effective and requiring railways to provide more detailed volume forecasts and operational plans at the start of each crop year.

The farm group “has been pressing for rail reform since our organization began in 2012,” noted chair Kevin Auch.

The bill will “correct the imbalance between the market power of railways and shippers and ensure that the cost of system failures are not passed down the supply chain to farmers,” the commission said in a statement.
