Beef producers, what’s on your mind?

Keen to improve your management and profitability in 2016? The Beef Cattle Research Council wants to help.

But the organization says it needs producers to tell it what topics interest them or would be most useful on their operation.

“Feedback helps us deliver the information cow-calf producers, feedlots, veterinarians, meat packers and other industry players across the country need to make informed decisions to profitably and responsibly produce top-quality Canadian cattle and beef,” the organization says in a web post highlighting its 10 most popular web blogs.

The most popular topic last year was the 2014-15 western Canadian cow-calf survey. The survey, conducted last winter, was completed by 411 producers (half from Alberta) who collectively managed 76,000 cows.

The survey had a number of interesting findings, including that only 24 per cent of respondents stayed within the recommended 63-day breeding season and just 26 per cent of respondents bred heifers before the cows (and even that group was well under the four to six weeks recommended for heifers).

Other popular blogs looked at hormone use, antibiotic resistance, pain mitigation, and body condition scoring.

The Top 10 blogs can be found at beefresearch.ca. Producers wanting to suggest topics for future articles can email their requests to [email protected].
